Local Garden Care in Essendon North
Your GMC Team in Essendon North
Essendon North is the quieter northern end of Essendon, with post-war and interwar family homes on regular blocks, mature street trees and well-kept, practical gardens.
What we know about Essendon North gardens
- Essendon North's regular blocks and generous front setbacks suit an open lawn with a strong driveway edge and a low hedge to the fence line.
- Mature street trees mean real autumn leaf volume, and leaf left matted on turf for a fortnight will thin it noticeably.
- Established boundary hedges here hold a much better face on two or three light trims a year than on a single heavy annual cut.

About Essendon North
Essendon North sits right beside Essendon Airport, now known as Essendon Fields. The Commonwealth proclaimed the airport in 1921 on land once called St Johns, after an early landowner, and it remained Melbourne's main airport until international flights moved to the new Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine in 1970 and domestic flights followed in 1971. Residents were complaining about aircraft noise as early as 1930, which gives a sense of how long the suburb and the airfield have lived side by side. Essendon North is small, and Keilor Road separates it from Essendon to the south. Strathmore lies to the east, Niddrie to the west and Airport West to the north-west.
Soil, water and weather
Like its neighbours, Essendon North is built on the basalt clay of the north-west plain. On the airport side of the suburb, the open ground of Essendon Fields gives wind and afternoon sun a clear run at front gardens, so beds there dry out sooner than in the more sheltered streets. Clay lawns respond to the basics done well: coring in spring once the soil is dry enough to crumble, a feed in autumn, and a mowing height raised to about 35 to 50 mm through the hot months. Garden beds hold up better with mulch and plants suited to dry summers than with extra watering.
Jobs that suit Essendon North gardens
- Lawn mowing: Lawns in front of units and townhouses here often fall in the small or courtyard band at around $45 a visit, while a typical house lawn, front and back, sits around $50 to $65 on our pricing page.
- Garden clean ups: Spring clean ups in Essendon North usually mean pulling winter weeds before they set seed, cutting back last year's growth and edging the beds. All the green waste is taken away on the day.
- Hedge trimming: A front hedge gives privacy along the street and frames a simple post-war frontage. Shaping and the tidy-up are included in hedge trimming, from $60 depending on the size of the hedge.

Questions
Essendon North Garden Care FAQ
Is Essendon Airport still operating next to Essendon North?
Yes, as Essendon Fields. Since passenger services moved to Melbourne Airport in 1970 and 1971, it has been used for light planes, charter and freight. Gardens on the airfield side of the suburb catch more wind and sun than those further in, so they tend to dry out first.
What lawn suits an open Essendon North front yard?
A warm-season grass such as kikuyu, couch or a soft-leaf buffalo copes with dry summers on clay far better than a cool-season blend, and buffalo handles part shade best. Whatever the grass, mowing a little higher in summer keeps the roots cooler and the lawn green for longer.
