About Thomastown
Thomastown takes its name from John and Mary Thomas, who bought 106 acres here in 1848 for market gardening. Two years later William Westgarth bought land to the north and settled German families on it, and that historic settlement, Westgarthtown, still shares the suburb. Farms and horse racing filled the district until the Second World War, the Epping railway line opened in 1889, and in the 1930s a German dairying family founded the Pura Dairy here. Housing followed the Lalor co-operative after 1947, with many Italian, Macedonian and Greek families settling. Thomastown East has a grid of streets, while the later western side was laid out to keep through traffic away from homes. Edgars Creek runs through a linear park.
