Local Garden Care in Epping
Your GMC Team in Epping
Epping combines an older established centre with extensive newer housing estates pushing north and east, plus the major market and hospital precincts. Gardens range from mature backyards to brand-new estate lawns.
What we know about Epping gardens
- Epping's newer estate lawns sit on thin imported soil over compacted fill and need coring, gypsum and top dressing rather than more water.
- The older established pockets have generous backyards with mature planting that benefits from a proper staged reset rather than repeated partial tidy-ups.
- Commercial and medical frontages around the precincts need scheduled grounds maintenance to a consistent standard.

Gardening in Epping
About Epping
Epping began as a village reserve surveyed in 1839 and was named in 1853, after Epping Forest in England. Farmers of Irish origin were the main early settlers, dairy farms supplied the Melbourne market, and the Whittlesea railway, which ran from 1889 to 1960, carried milk and quarry products out of the district. The first township was built on higher ground west of the Darebin Creek, and several of its older buildings are bluestone taken from the surrounding volcanic plains. Large-scale suburban building started in the 1970s, and new housing is still spreading across the northern fringe. High Street and McDonalds Road are the main roads, and Pacific Epping on Cooper Street is the main shopping centre.
Soil, water and weather
Epping is mostly flat basalt plain, which is why bluestone was so easy to come by, and the soil that formed from it is heavy, reactive clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Land close to the Darebin Creek was considered flood-prone, which is why the early township was built on the rise to its west. Toward the north the ground lifts into several large hills with views back to the city, and gardens on those slopes are more exposed. On a sloping block, water runs off before it soaks in, so a slow, deep watering and a coarse mulch that will not wash away work far better than frequent short sprays.
Jobs that suit Epping gardens
- Commercial maintenance: Epping has a large non-residential footprint, from the High Street and Cooper Street shopping areas to business sites on its main roads. Commercial grounds maintenance is quoted per site, keeping lawns, beds and frontages on a set schedule.
- Lawn mowing: Corner blocks and the bigger lots in Epping's older streets can tip into the large lawn band on our pricing guide, around $70 to $110 or more a visit, while a standard family lawn front and back is usually $50 to $65.
- Hedge trimming: Screening hedges on the exposed northern estates take a battering from wind and thin out at the base when only the top is cut. Hedge trimming starts from $60, and keeping the sides slightly narrower at the top lets light reach the lower growth.

Questions
Epping Garden Care FAQ
Why does the soil in my Epping garden crack open in summer?
Epping sits on the volcanic basalt plain, and the clay that forms from it swells when it is wet and shrinks as it dries. Wide summer cracks are normal on these soils. Mulch on the beds, a higher mowing height and deep, occasional watering all slow the drying.
Which council covers Epping?
Epping is in the City of Whittlesea. The area became part of the Darebin Shire in 1870, which was renamed the Epping Shire in 1893, and it joined the Whittlesea Shire in 1915, so the link with Whittlesea goes back more than a century.
