Local Garden Care in Craigieburn
Your GMC Team in Craigieburn
Craigieburn is one of the largest and fastest-growing suburbs on Melbourne's northern edge, built out over the last two decades in successive housing estates around the older township core. Gardens run from brand-new estate lawns to established blocks near the original centre.
What we know about Craigieburn gardens
- Most Craigieburn lawns sit on 50-100mm of imported soil over compacted building fill, which is why they brown off in January no matter how much they are watered โ coring and gypsum are the fix.
- The estates are open and exposed with little mature canopy, so wind pulls moisture out of gardens fast and young trees need low, loose staking to avoid root rock.
- Backyards on newer Craigieburn lots are compact, and the narrow side strip between house and fence is almost always better paved or turfed synthetically than grassed.

About Craigieburn
Craigieburn takes its name from an old bluestone inn that served travellers on the Old Sydney Road; the name joins the Gaelic craigie, meaning craggy, with the Scots burn, a stream. For about a century it stayed a small farming hamlet around the railway station, which opened in 1872. Suburban subdivision began in 1972, and the plaza, golf course, leisure centre and schools followed through the 1970s and 1980s. Much of the suburb stands more than 200 metres above sea level, rising to Mount Ridley in the north, which has clear views back to the city. The Merri Creek forms the eastern boundary, and since 2005 the Hume Highway has bypassed the old centre.
Soil, water and weather
Craigieburn is high, open volcanic country, and the soil under most gardens is heavy basalt clay. In the older streets laid out from the 1970s, gardens have had decades to build up organic matter, but compaction under paths, play areas and parking spots is still the main reason lawns thin out. The clay drains slowly after a wet week and sets hard in a dry one. Keeping the lawn a little longer through summer, aerating worn patches in spring and feeding in autumn rather than in midsummer suits these conditions.
Jobs that suit Craigieburn gardens
- Hedge trimming: The first estates from the 1970s and 1980s now have hedges and screening trees that are thirty years old or more. Many need bringing back to a manageable height in stages rather than in one hard cut. Hedge trimming starts from $60.
- Lawn mowing: Craigieburn ranges from compact new lots to larger blocks in the older streets near the original centre. Mowing starts from about $45 for a small lawn, and regular weekly or fortnightly visits get the best per-visit rate.
- Commercial maintenance: Craigieburn's shopping centres and business frontages along its main roads need their gardens and verges kept tidy all year. Commercial grounds maintenance runs on a regular schedule and is quoted per site.
- Garden clean ups: Before selling or renting out one of the older homes, a full garden clean up clears overgrowth, weeds and leaf build-up from beds and fence lines, and takes the green waste away on the day.

Questions
Craigieburn Garden Care FAQ
Why does the lawn on my older Craigieburn block wear out along the same paths?
Compaction. On basalt clay, the strips where people and pets walk every day get pressed hard, so water runs off instead of soaking in and the grass thins. Coring those strips in spring, top dressing and mowing a little higher usually brings them back over a season or two.
Does Craigieburn really sit higher than the suburbs further south?
Yes. Most of Craigieburn is more than 200 metres above sea level, rising to Mount Ridley in the north. Higher, open ground dries out faster in wind and sun, so mulch, deeper watering and a higher mowing height matter more here than in sheltered inner suburbs.
