Local Garden Care in Dallas

Your GMC Team in Dallas

Dallas is a compact, culturally diverse suburb with a mix of post-war homes and newer infill, centred on its shopping strip. Gardens are practical and family-focused, and many carry productive vegetable gardens alongside the lawn.

What we know about Dallas gardens

  • Smaller Dallas blocks make every metre count, so neat edging and tidy hedging do a lot to make a compact yard read as well-organised.
  • Many Dallas gardeners grow vegetables and herbs alongside ornamentals โ€” seasonal bed maintenance and pruning keep a productive garden productive.
  • The clay soils here need regular organic matter and aeration to support both lawn and vegetable beds through the year.

Gardening in Dallas

About Dallas

Dallas is a compact suburb wedged between two railway lines, the Upfield line on its east and the Craigieburn line on its west, with Barry Road along the north and Broadmeadows to the south. It was named after the Governor of Victoria, General Sir Reginald Dallas Brooks, and has no link to the city in Texas. Before the houses came the land was farmed, and in 1924 the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works built a reservoir here to supply water to the Broadmeadows area. Most homes were built by the Housing Commission between 1961 and 1970, and the shops at Dobell Place and Dargie Court are the local centre. For trains, residents use Coolaroo, Broadmeadows or Upfield stations.

Soil, water and weather

Dallas is flat basalt plain, and the clay under it is heavy and slow to drain, so water from roofs and paths tends to sit in low spots after a wet winter. Gardens here are now fifty to sixty years old, but a spade's depth down the clay is still there. That matters most for vegetable patches and fruit trees, which do far better in raised or well-built beds than planted straight into the subsoil. Summers are dry too: the nearest Bureau of Meteorology station, at Melbourne Airport, averages only about 537 mm of rain a year.

Jobs that suit Dallas gardens

  • Lawn mowing: With compact Housing Commission blocks, many Dallas lawns are small, and our pricing guide starts at about $45 for a small or courtyard lawn. A regular fortnightly visit keeps the edges sharp and the grass short enough to stay neat between cuts.
  • Garden clean ups: A seasonal clean up suits a productive garden: spent vegetable crops pulled, beds weeded, overgrown vines and fruit trees cut back, and all the green waste removed on the day so the beds are ready to replant.
  • Rubbish removal: When a Dallas home is cleared out between owners or tenants, or before a renovation, the yard usually holds more than a green bin can take. Rubbish removal clears general rubbish and garden waste in the same trip and is priced per load.

Questions

Dallas Garden Care FAQ

Is Dallas named after the city in Texas?

No. Dallas was named after General Sir Reginald Dallas Brooks, a Governor of Victoria, and has no connection to Texas. Most of the suburb was built by the Housing Commission in the 1960s, so its gardens are now well established and often due for cutting back.

What is the best way to grow vegetables in Dallas clay?

Raised beds or deeply composted beds work best. Dallas sits on heavy basalt clay that drains slowly, so vegetables planted straight into it can sit in cold, wet soil all winter. Our clean ups can clear and weed tired beds so they are ready for replanting.
