About Kalkallo
Kalkallo began as a stop on the Sydney Road. Its post office opened as Kinlochewe in 1850, was renamed Donnybrook in 1854 and took the name Kalkallo in 1874. During the 1850s gold rush the township boomed, with seventeen accommodation houses, a police station, a jail and a court house serving the traffic heading north. When the North East railway opened in the 1870s the passing trade fell away and the town shrank. Until the 2010s Kalkallo was little more than a few streets, a service station and a pub on the Hume Freeway. Most of the suburb is now being developed by one large estate, while the Merri Creek still runs through its eastern side.
