Upfield is not a separate suburb but the residential and industrial pocket around Upfield station on Barry Road, at the end of the Upfield line, inside Campbellfield (VIC 3061). Dallas and Coolaroo sit immediately to the west, across the railway line that forms Campbellfield's boundary with Coolaroo.
What we know about Upfield gardens
- Housing here was built south of the Ford factory site, with a high school opening in 1968 and Upfield primary school in 1970, so many home gardens date from the 1960s and have had decades to grow.
- The large industrial sites north of the station, including the former Ford plant that closed in October 2016, mean frontages and car park gardens here need scheduled maintenance rather than the odd tidy-up.
- The name is said to describe the area's open country, and that openness still shows: wind and summer heat strip moisture from exposed front lawns quickly, so cutting height matters more here than in sheltered streets.

About Upfield
Upfield takes its name from its railway station, which reopened under that name on 17 August 1959 when electric trains were extended from Fawkner to serve workers at the new Ford factory. A station had stood near the spot since 1889 as North Campbellfield, opening and closing twice as the line was cut back and restored. The present station building dates from 1963 and 1964, and trains are stabled in a yard to the north. The name is usually said to describe the open country around it, though some link it to the author Arthur Upfield. Houses were built south of the factory, a small shopping centre and post office grew up near the station, and buses run from here to Broadmeadows, Coburg North and Craigieburn.
Soil, water and weather
Upfield is part of the flat basalt plain that runs across Campbellfield, Dallas and Coolaroo, and the clay under it is heavy and reactive: it holds water after rain and cracks open in a dry summer. Large industrial sites and wide roads mean a lot of hard surface around the houses, and Merlynston Creek begins close by in the National Boulevard Nature Reserve. Home gardens here lose moisture fast in hot northerly weather, so mulch on every bed, a higher cut from December and deep watering rather than frequent light watering keep lawns and plants going through summer.
Jobs that suit Upfield gardens
- Commercial maintenance: The industrial land around the station and the former Ford site carries plenty of frontages, car park beds and verges. Commercial grounds maintenance is scheduled to suit each site and quoted after a walk-through, so the scope is agreed from the first visit.
- Lawn mowing: Home lawns in Upfield's residential streets are priced on size, from about $45 for a small lawn to around $50 to $65 for a standard family block, with the best rate going to regular weekly or fortnightly mowing.
- Garden clean ups: Gardens planted when these houses were new have had decades to grow. A clean up cuts back overgrown shrubs and trees, clears weedy beds and takes every load of green waste away the same day.
